[KOREA] Korea’s “BigMama” going for something different musically

Chosun reports, “Hardcore fans of Big Mama, expecting more of the group’s trademark power tracks, might be disappointed by the quartet’s latest album. But the four women’s rich vocals on their fourth outing make a strong appeal to a wider audience. Big Mama has filled “Blossom” with songs that might seem bland compared to their earlier strapping hits, but the album is likely to appeal to a broader range of listeners. And in fact the lead track “Betrayal” has already topped the domestic pop chart, alongside “Tell Me” by the Wonder Girls. “Betrayal” is an easy listening song with

a beautiful melody. The third tra

ck, “Promises of the World,” is a mellow ballad.”

“Our trademark was our strong, powerful voices. But if we keep singing in that same style some people might feel like it’s too much,” says the R&B group’s leader Shin Yeon-a. “Until now we’d focused on our unique style, so we agreed to sing songs that would appeal to a broader fanbase,” Shin adds. “This album was like a break for me,” agrees Park Min-hye, the youngest of the group.”

In a recent article on Chosun, the publication interviewed a few car show models about the modeling scene and the challenges.According to the article, one model said, “Sometimes races are held even in December. Though it’s extremely cold, we have to cheer people at racing tracks wearing zest tops, hot pants or miniskirts,” said one. “It feels like being frozen alive. It’s really hard to work in very hot or cold weather, but we have to smile at all times, no matter how cold or hot it is.” Well, that sounds harsh, but most car show girls say it is more painful to endure harsh comments on their pictures on the web, the distorted image of racing models as sexually available and other prejudices.”

“Many auto show models are hurt by those defamations on the web. The physical discomfort becomes easier to endure, but hurt feelings don’t heal so easily. Some consider quitting their job because of them, and every one of them has experienced this growing

pain. But the momentum that keeps them going is the job opportunities, which are better than for other models. And, of course, the money. Along with cheering racers in racing tracks, publicizing cars at auto shows, they can work as models at exhibitions, fashion models and MCs.”

In a recent article on Chosun, Samsung has developed a water powered cell phone.

According to the article, “In 2010 your mobile phone may be powered by water. Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced Thursday that it has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that runs on H20. “When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas,” explained Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ research center. “The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power.” Other fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, while Samsung’s needs only water. “
